The iPhone 18 Pro’s variable aperture is a real camera-control upgrade: its 48MP Fusion Main camera offers four settings, from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4.0. Early point-and-shoot observations found a less obvious difference from the iPhone 17 Pro than from the iPhone 15 Pro, so the new model’s clearest case is added creative control—not a guaranteed jump in automatic photo quality. What variable aperture changes

Aperture is the opening that controls how much light reaches the camera sensor. Early camera comparisons show a smaller gap over iPhone 17 Pro

Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for around 50% charge in about 15 minutes when used with a 60W-capable adapter or higher that supports Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS).

A separate third-party test report published September 17 attributed a 0%-to-100% charge in as little as 55 minutes to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, with a 52W peak during the first 12 minutes. That is a reported test result for the Pro Max; Apple’s 15-minute figure is its rating for the iPhone 18 Pro under the stated adapter conditions.

Should you upgrade from an iPhone 17 Pro?

Choose the iPhone 18 Pro if you want to select the Main camera’s aperture or need more than 1TB of storage: it offers up to 2TB, compared with the iPhone 17 Pro’s 1TB maximum. Its 256GB U.S. launch price was $100 higher than the iPhone 17 Pro’s 256GB launch price: $1,199 versus $1,099.

If you already have an iPhone 17 Pro and mostly take automatic point-and-shoot photos, the early comparison found a less obvious difference between those generations than between the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro.
