Apple’s iPhone Duo can replace an iPad mini for some people, especially those who want one cellular device for calls, reading, video and light multitasking. It is not a straight swap for every iPad mini workflow: the mini has an 8.3-inch display, iPadOS, broader tablet multitasking and a dedicated-device setup. The real choice is consolidation versus specialization.

What the iPhone Duo brings to the comparison
The Duo’s main advantage is simple: it starts as a phone and opens into a 7.6-inch screen. Apple says it supports two apps side by side, two windows of the same app and saved app pairs. That makes the device a natural fit for reading a long article, watching video, checking messages or handling light multitasking without reaching for a second device.
It also keeps the phone features that define an iPhone. The Duo includes cellular connectivity, is eSIM-only worldwide and has a 48MP Fusion Main camera, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera and an optical-quality 2× Telephoto. Apple also lists up to 31 hours of inner-display video playback under its testing conditions.
The foldable display is not the largest screen in this comparison. At 7.6 inches, the Duo’s inner panel is smaller than the iPad mini’s 8.3-inch display. Its advantage is that this larger workspace travels as part of the phone rather than as a second slab in your bag.
Can the iPhone Duo replace the iPad mini?
Yes, for some users. Craig Federighi said the Duo can often fill the space previously occupied by an iPad mini, describing a scenario in which someone starts reading on an iPhone and opens the foldable to go deeper into the content.
That use case covers reading, browsing, video and light multitasking. It does not turn the Duo into an iPad: the phone runs iOS 27.1, while the mini runs iPadOS, and the two systems can offer different app interfaces and features.
Where the iPad mini still has the advantage
The iPad mini is the more focused tablet. Its 8.3-inch display is larger than the Duo’s inner screen, and iPadOS is designed around tablet workflows. The mini also supports more than two apps in its multitasking environment, while the Duo’s announced Split View is limited to two apps at a time.
The price gap is equally clear. In the U.S., the iPad mini starts at $599 for 128GB. That makes it a much less expensive way to add a compact tablet to an existing phone setup. It does not, however, replace the phone that many buyers already carry.
Apple Pencil support is another dividing line. Apple has announced USB-C Apple Pencil support for the Duo later in 2026. The iPad mini supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil USB-C. Buyers who rely on the Pro model’s tablet workflow should not treat the two accessory ecosystems as interchangeable.
The mini also works better when you want two devices with separate jobs. You can use the phone while the tablet is occupied, charging or mounted elsewhere. That separation can matter for travel, specialized tablet apps and workflows in which a second device serves as a backup.
The price question: one expensive device or two cheaper ones?
The iPhone Duo’s U.S. starting price is $1,999 for 256GB. An iPhone 18 Pro paired with a 128GB iPad mini is reported at $1,798, or $201 less than the Duo before taxes and accessories.
The two-device setup is less elegant but more flexible. It provides a dedicated phone, a dedicated tablet, separate batteries and a larger tablet display. The Duo charges a premium for putting both roles into one foldable device, along with its higher-end phone camera system and up to 2TB of storage.
That makes the buying decision less about screen size alone and more about what you are trying to eliminate. If the goal is to carry fewer devices, the Duo has a clear practical argument. If the goal is to add an inexpensive small tablet to a phone you already like, the iPad mini is the easier choice.
