The hero who accompanied an entire generation (and still does) finally has his own day. We're talking about the most famous Saiyan warrior of all, Son Goku, as the Japanese Anniversary Association officially declared May 9 as Goku Day in Japan.
Why May 9?
On May 9, the Japanese Anniversary Association officially declared that date as Goku Day in Japan. The reason? In Japanese, the numbers 5 and 9 can be pronounced as Go and Ku, respectively. The studio Toei Animation, responsible for the Dragon Ball anime adaptation, sent a request to the association for May 9 to be officially recognized as Goku Day. The seiyuu (the term for Japanese voice actors) of Goku, Masako Nozawa, attended an event in Shinjuku after the screening of the recently released Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' to commemorate the new day.
The Voice of Goku
During the event, Nozawa talked about how she really hated voice acting, as she had started as an actress in a theater group. However, she went through several auditions to voice male roles, quickly becoming popular, and before she knew it, she had begun a career as a voice actress. When Nozawa auditioned for the role of Goku, Akira Toriyama himself, creator of the Dragon Ball manga, decided immediately upon hearing her voice that she was the one to bring the little Saiyan to life. Toriyama also chose Nozawa to voice Goku's sons, Gohan and Goten.
A Tradition of Official Days
This is not the first time the Japanese Anniversary Association has declared such a date; in the past, May 25 has been declared as Terminator Day, as well as the world-famous May 4 as Star Wars Day, among many other dates. Finally, Goku fans now have an official day to celebrate the strongest Super Saiyan in the galaxy.
