The console also sold more than 300,000 units in Japan, is sold out in many European countries, and Breath of the Wild has become the best-selling launch title, displacing the classic Super Mario 64.
Good news for Nintendo. Despite some factory defects and differences of interpretation regarding dead pixels, the Nintendo Switch has started off on the right foot. The hybrid console is a high-profile gamble for the company, which needs to recover urgently after the commercial failure of the Wii U. Of course, it's still too early to evaluate the Switch's long-term performance, and initial impact can deceive even the best analysts, but the truth is that players are going out to get the console, along with a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
A Record-Breaking Debut
The latest data comes via Reggie Fils-Aimé, president of Nintendo of America. Although he didn't share exact numbers, he said that the Nintendo Switch is the fastest-selling console in the continent within the first two days, a new record for the company that surpasses the mark set by the Nintendo Wii (as a reference, it distributed 600,000 units in its first eight days). Add to that the 330,000 units sold across Japan during its initial 72 hours, the 80,000 consoles sold in the United Kingdom (24 hours), and the 105,000 units in France, the best launch in history for a console in that country.
Breath of the Wild Makes History
The game lineup has been one of the most criticized points of the Nintendo Switch; however, that didn't stop players from pouring their enthusiasm onto The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This new flagship title, which is also available for Wii U, has become the most successful launch game in Nintendo's history, defeating the mythical Super Mario 64.
