As we anticipated in our latest article, the Nokia 3310 made its debut yesterday. Rumors out of China suggested the phone's design would remain largely intact; however, the product presented by HMD Global shares less with its predecessor than we expected.
Just imagine the current smartphone market for HMD Global to steal the show at Mobile World Congress 2017 with a feature phone. But then again, this isn't just any feature phone. The new Nokia 3310 is a reality. That phone that achieved deity status among internet memes returns with three promises: the same durability, the same battery life, and the right balance between classic and modern. I doubt anyone will have trouble accepting the first two, provided certain compromises are made, but the most delicate is the third. Were the modifications to the Nokia 3310 correct, or did they go too far?
A Look at the Specs
The reboot of the Nokia 3310 features a 2.4-inch color QVGA display (320 by 240 pixels), finally leaving behind the old monochrome 84 by 48 pixel panel. That makes the phone taller, but it also became slimmer. On the back, there's a 2-megapixel camera with LED flash, and internal storage is 16 MB, expandable via microSD (up to 32 GB). It includes an MP3 player and FM tuner, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and will be available in single and dual SIM versions. Connectivity is limited to 2G (so some markets won't be able to use it), and several sources indicate Opera Mini as the basic browsing tool. The software platform is Series 30+, already seen on previous models (Nokia 105, 108, 130, 150, and more), and of course it includes an updated version of Snake.
Battery and Price
When it comes to battery, the new Nokia 3310 delivers a month of standby and 22 hours of talk time, so users shouldn't face any energy crisis on the road. The charging port is micro USB, and the battery is removable, something we definitely applaud. HMD confirmed the global launch of the phone, with an estimated price of $52 (49 euros). There's no exact date yet, but spokespeople said "second quarter" of this year.
