After the success of District 9, and the fiascos of Elysium and Chappie, director Neill Blomkamp returns to his roots to embark on a new experimental film studio. And as a sample, Neill Blomkamp presents us with the trailer of Oats: Volume 1, his new experimental short.
Neill Blomkamp is embarking on a new experimental film studio called Oats Studios. And to preview some of his new work, the director of District 9, Elysium and Chappie, released a trailer of some of the upcoming projects from the studio, which will be released on Steam in the next couple of months. The trailer begins with a scene of the Eiffel Tower covered in vegetation, while a voice in the background explains that aliens have arrived to exterminate humanity. The video shows a bit more: a woman shooting an alien in a red-lit corridor, American soldiers flying over Vietnam, trucks with Texas flags driving through the desert, and a bunch of aliens similar in appearance to lizards.
The trailer explains that what we are seeing will soon be a series of short experimental films called Oats: Volume 1. Blomkamp has been giving hints about Oats Studios over the past year, asking if fans would be interested in buying movies on Steam, and posted some intriguing images on his Twitter account, showing one of the aliens seen in the trailer, as well as a Vietnamese soldier.
While Blomkamp gained considerable acclaim after the debut of District 9, he began making short films, like Alive in Joburg (which later became District 9), Halo: Landfall, the first shorts of the Halo series with real people, and most recently The Escape, an entry in BMW's The Hire short film series, with Clive Owen. So it seems, these upcoming shorts will be a set of truly exciting science fiction films. The trailer simply says that Oats: Volume 1 is scheduled to begin airing soon. From here, Oats Studios already has our attention, and we can't wait to see what Blomkamp has up his sleeve.
