Bloomberg reported on October 28, 2026, that OpenAI intended to buy AI computing chips from Google as part of its infrastructure build-out. A Yahoo Finance/Stocktwits report identified the chips as Google Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), attributing that account to The Information.
Which Google chips are involved?
TPU is short for Tensor Processing Unit. Bloomberg described the prospective purchase as a plan to buy AI computing chips; the Yahoo Finance/Stocktwits report identified them as TPUs. Bloomberg attributed its account to a person familiar with the matter and said OpenAI and Google declined to comment.
What OpenAI had used Google TPUs for before
In an article published June 30, 2025, Silicon UK reported that OpenAI had recently begun renting Google TPUs through Google Cloud for inference. Inference is the stage when a trained model produces outputs. That rental was a separate, earlier arrangement from the purchase intention reported in October 2026.
OpenAI also has a separate custom-chip effort with Broadcom. NeoTeo previously covered OpenAI’s Jalapeño chip, a different project from the reported Google-chip purchase.
