Is there life beyond peak browser? Can browsers keep evolving without ruining basic functionality or performance? The team at Opera believes so, and they recently shared their new vision, called Opera One. Now available in early access, this project draws inspiration from modular design to introduce alternative ideas for tab management, better multithreading support, and, as you might expect, greater integration with artificial intelligence tools.

After looking at the latest browser decisions, it makes sense that users want to run away. Google Chrome is getting slower, Microsoft destroyed Edge in record time, Firefox remains stuck in its own nebula, and the alternatives haven't managed to take off. Personally, I haven't moved from Ungoogled Chromium, a basic and minimalist experience when compared to other browsers, but many users want the browser to get out of the way, or alternatively, that its secondary functions don't get in the way.

The people at Opera have made their own reading of the situation, and their first expression is Opera One. This new browser still relies on Chromium code at its core, but has a completely different interface, inspired by the famous Modular Design. It also brings new tab management, initial integration with ChatGPT, and a composer with greater emphasis on multithreading.

The modular design of Opera One doesn't offer too many surprises on the surface. Prioritizing the left side of the interface is characteristic of Opera, with a sidebar that includes direct shortcuts to TikTok and messaging services like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. However, two icons stand out from the rest: ChatGPT and ChatSonic.

Opera One not only demonstrates a closer relationship with these chatbots, but also brings support for getting "AI Prompts". Basically, the idea is to select text from a page and ask one of the models for a brief explanation or a translation. Both ChatGPT and ChatSonic require separate accounts, and ChatSonic limits its free offering to 10,000 words for Opera users.

Islands: A New Way to Manage Tabs

By far, the most important change in Opera One appears in its tab management, with the concept of 'islands'. Instead of having an endless line of tabs (as in traditional browsers), the islands automatically group tabs, based on factors like domain or context. To save space, simply click on the color of each island. This makes the titles disappear, but you can return to any tab using Ctrl+Tab.

A Composer for Better Performance

Finally, Opera One aims for better performance with its multithreading composer. What does that mean? All active elements 'drawn' or 'painted' in the browser now run on a separate thread, instead of using the user interface thread. This way, Opera hopes to reduce the lag and stuttering problems that many browsers suffer when running animations and basic effects.

Early Access and Telemetry

Anyone who wants to try Opera One can download it without restrictions, but these are the first steps of a browser in early access. Opera plans to change, add, or remove features based on user feedback and needs. With that in mind, Opera One sends a lot of telemetry by default; however, that behavior can be changed during installation.
