The list of strange objects that can run Doom keeps growing. From ultrasound machines to bacteria, the Doomguy knows no limits, and now it's time for lawn mowers. The famous Swedish brand Husqvarna announced the release of a limited update for its Automower NERA product line, allowing users to enjoy the id Software classic between April and September of this year.
How good of an idea is installing Doom on a robotic lawn mower? Knowing the game's original history, our first answer is "not much", but out-of-control experiments (and the demonic hordes that arise from them) haven't stopped enthusiasts before, nor will they now. Apparently, it all started at the 2023 edition of DreamHack Winter, where a group of developers installed a copy of Doom on the Husqvarna Automower 430X NERA, and now the company decided that all users of its hardware can enjoy that experience...
How to play Doom on a 3,500 euro lawn mower
Husqvarna shared precise instructions to access this special version of Doom: Its download will be enabled through the Automower Connect App, which works exclusively with Automower NERA lawn mowers. However, users will also need to register at this address to get the update, using the lawn mower's serial number.
Add to that time restrictions: Doom will remain installed on the mowers from April 9 to September 9. The registration process will last until August 26, and Husqvarna will uninstall Doom with an additional update when its availability ends (sounds like DRM on a lawn mower). The company warns that it could take up to a week before the game can be run on the mowers.
The official announcement includes a small FAQ and the complete list of compatible machines. Finally, the entire Husqvarna x Doom campaign will reach more than thirty countries, and Spain appears on the list.
