A very special way to get to know the world is by listening to its radio stations. What does each region prefer? What are the local trends? Is the priority entertainment or politics? The most interesting thing is that we only need a basic web connection to access them, but the Radio Garden portal makes the process even simpler, placing its registered stations on a map similar to Google Maps.
Do you want to listen to a Japanese radio station? I suppose that just by typing Japanese radios in Google it should be enough to find at least one or two streams live, but it would be great if someone took the work of locating the stations on a map. The same process could be very useful to discover other radios in remote regions, say Tonga, the Faroe Islands, American Samoa, or the Azores.
Radio Garden: The world of radio, literally
The world is huge, and the mainstream doesn't always reach everywhere, which is good. Instead of playing the latest music, some stations have a clear community profile, sharing local news and other news that might be of interest to neighbors. This is where the Radio Garden portal comes in.
Radio Garden is a creation by Golo Föllmer, based at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. The entire service is so easy to use that it's almost redundant to explain it. Basically, we have a map with features very similar to Google Maps (the site does not mention Google as a source), covered with green points that indicate the presence of stations, and all we have to do is hover over them to listen.
If a region has several radio stations, the list will appear on the right side of the screen (click on each name if you want to change the station). At the top right you'll see the stream source with its URL address, and in case of any technical problem, Radio Garden will show a message in red.
Radio Garden has a clear preference for FM radio stations, which is logical if we consider that those stations have the greatest presence on the web.
