Resident Evil, the game that defined the survival horror genre on PlayStation, is trying to expand its legacy back to the 16-bit era. A group of fans is developing a 16-bit Resident Evil for Sega Mega Drive, and you can already download the demo.
Finally, after almost two months of work, the PSCD.ru website has released a 16-bit Resident Evil demo for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis. No details of the story were given, but based on screenshots and the demo, it seems that Claire Redfield will play an important role in the game. The demo is very short, but it shows several key gameplay concepts such as a 16-bit representation of the iconic inventory screen of Resident Evil and an isometric third-person view (a very interesting detail since there aren't many isometric games for Sega's console). The level shown seems to take place in the Spencer Mansion, which is infested with zombies, composed of long corridors, a huge staircase in the middle of a large hall, and a bloody scribble of "RedRum" on a bathroom wall in an apparent reference to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.
This version of Resident Evil in 16 bits is, obviously, still in the early stages of development, but the Russian team at PSCD is committed to moving forward to finish it (unless Capcom decides to step in and shut down the project as is common in these cases). Released in 1996 for PlayStation and later adapted for Windows, Sega Saturn, and Nintendo DS, Resident Evil presents us with Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, members of the elite S.T.A.R.S. group, as they investigate on the outskirts of Raccoon City after the disappearance of the Bravo team members. They soon become trapped in a mansion infested with zombies and other monsters which they must face in order to escape. The download of Resident Evil in 16 bits is a ROM, so we recommend you use the GENS emulator to play it without any issues.
