The idea of miniaturizing video game consoles is nothing new. We've previously seen two versions and different of the Nintendo GameCube, and turning the Nintendo 64 into a portable is a very popular hack, but now it's the turn of the Nintendo Wii, and this design is most likely the most compact in the world. It's called Short Stack, its dimensions are very similar to a deck of cards, and the most impressive thing is that it uses original hardware.
It's not a few users who wonder why some enthusiasts make such a great effort to miniaturize their consoles, and I mean projects that go far beyond a case change. For example, we still remember well the “portable version” of the PlayStation 5 created by DIY Perks at the beginning of this year, and the Frog Boy Color transforms the Game Boy Color into a mini Game Boy Advance, but it's always possible to take an extra step… assuming one knows where and how to cut. James Smith, known under the username “loopj” on GitHub, definitely knows both things, and the result is Short Stack, the smallest Nintendo Wii in the world.
Short Stack: A “Nano” Nintendo Wii with Official Hardware
It's a model at 1:2.38 scale when compared to the first version of the Nintendo Wii, or in other parameters, 7.4 percent of the original volume. As its name suggests, the Short Stack design requires stacking custom PCBs and a custom heatsink, but none of this is possible without a massive cut on the console's PCB. The technique is known as Omega Trim and reduces the hardware to its essential components in just 62 x 62 millimeters.
In fact, the cuts are so advanced that the Short Stack design requires several additional elements. The two most important are the Power Strip (which restores power input), and the Periphlex flex that enables data lines for USB, Bluetooth, and GameCube controllers. Added to that is an additional PCB with all the regulators, an HDMI connector, a microSD reader, and four TRRS inputs to convert the gamepad connectors to a more compact format.
Another PCB for the front part, a custom heatsink and a fan of just 20 x 20 millimeters make the console a reality. Needless to say, Short Stack is not a project for beginners, but if someone has a spare Wii and the necessary budget, they will find all the information in the link below.
