The game recently marked its twentieth anniversary. Each region had a different release date, but the effect was the same: the new title from Team Silent and Konami became a masterpiece of survival horror, with disturbing psychological elements backed by twisted levels and a solid soundtrack, taking some distance from the "physical horror" we saw (and enjoyed) in Resident Evil. Its sequels and adaptations did not take long to arrive.
There are no major excuses not to play it. It's all about finding a disc image of the game, loading an emulator with some plugins to improve the graphics, and letting Silent Hill hit you head-on. If you have the original hardware, even better! The limits in resolution and texture quality contribute to creating a horrible and deteriorated environment from which you must escape in one piece. Now, if you prefer an alternative… you could explore those levels without starting a game.
The only thing you need is a copy of Silent Hill 1 Level Viewer, a tool developed by Giromancy on YouTube. All the levels are there, in their normal and "parallel" versions. The controls of this viewer are very simple (arrow keys or WASD to move, Shift speeds up walking, Ctrl slows it down), and you'll also have the possibility to turn the fog on or off to see how large the levels really are, or how deep the visual tricks were. After all, the first PlayStation was not a shining example of high performance.
