Some universes absolutely need to adopt virtual and augmented reality, and Star Wars is certainly one of them. From space battles to personal lightsaber duels, the potential is too great to ignore. Disney has decided to take a new step and join forces with Lenovo to create Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, an augmented reality platform that includes a headset, a tracking sensor, and a lightsaber. In addition to fighting the great Sith of the saga, you can also play Dejarik and strategic combat.

It's an unbreakable bond. Every time we think of the Star Wars universe and the new concept of 'mixed reality', we know they can work together. Of course, it's not simple. It requires polished ideas and solid development. The quality of the experience is critical, and if we go by what we've seen so far in virtual reality, the illusion often falls apart. An exception to the rule was Trials on Tatooine (compatible with HTC Vive), though ultimately it's a short scenario with several limitations. Disney has a historic opportunity to strengthen the relationship between Star Wars and both realities, and the next item on its list is Star Wars: Jedi Challenges.

Jedi Challenges is a bundle consisting of a headset compatible with high-end iOS or Android smartphones, a tracking sensor, and a good-sized lightsaber that also serves as a controller. By far the most interesting game mode is the one that enables duels against Kylo Ren, Darth Maul, and Darth Vader himself. Then there's a 'strategic combat' mode, which partly reminds us of StarCraft, and finally we get to Dejarik (Holochess). All three mini-games are supposedly part of a larger experience in which the player is trained in body and mind by a new character called 'The Archivist'.

The pre-sale of Star Wars: Jedi Challenges started yesterday at a price of $200. For now it will be exclusive to the US market, with main distribution handled by Lenovo and Best Buy stores. First shipments will take place in November, and from there we imagine wider availability.
