Tesla is aiming to deliver Cybercabs to customers by the end of 2026, according to remarks by Tesla vice president of vehicle engineering Lars Moravy. Reuters reported the remarks on October 22 after Tesla’s Q3 2026 earnings call. Moravy described the goal as something the company was trying to achieve.

Most Cybercabs are planned for Tesla’s own fleet

Autoblog reported that Tesla plans to keep most Cybercabs for its transportation service and sell a smaller number to customers. A Reddit thread summarizing Moravy’s remarks described a more specific sequence: vehicles coming off the Texas line would initially go to Tesla’s internal Robotaxi fleet, while customer deliveries would start small and grow as the company learns about delivery, ownership and fleet management.

The NHTSA inquiry concerns certification

CarBuzz reported on October 26 that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was investigating Tesla’s certification of the Cybercab, a two-seat vehicle designed without a steering wheel or pedals. Autoblog also describes it as having no side mirrors. CarBuzz reported that Tesla’s response explaining its certification process under oath is due October 30, 2026.

Tesla began limited passenger service in Austin on September 4, 2026. That Tesla-operated service is separate from the planned customer handovers.
