The advantages of digital photography are overwhelming, but there are still many enthusiasts and professionals out there who, besides working with film, are always willing to experiment by introducing random elements. In the case of photographer Kate Miller-Wilson, it's about static electricity. Essentially, she takes her 4x5 films and subjects them to an electric shock, creating double exposures and light patterns that would otherwise be impossible to reproduce…
Of course, the process is not without risks. 4x5 films have good availability, but they are not known for being economical, and the losses are significant. By introducing static, the photographer relinquishes all creative control, and any idea of manipulating shape or intensity is automatically discarded.

Her equipment consists of a Zone VI 4×5 camera, a Schneider Xenar 150mm f/3.5 lens from 1928, and Ilford Ortho Plus black and white film… but the most interesting thing is the source of static. It is a Wimshurst Machine, designed by British inventor James Wimshurst between 1880 and 1883. A wheel, a lever, two electrodes, and a beautiful spark that jumps from one to the other.
Inside a darkroom and under red safety light, Kate takes each film sheet with a glove, places it between both electrodes, and turns the wheel. The only option for static electricity is to pass through the film, and on more than one occasion it destroys it immediately, but there are times when development delivers wonderful results…
