After seeing the work done by Bing and Facebook, it’s time for the Mountain View giant to tell us what was most searched in 2014. With a privileged position in the market, Google can produce what is probably the most accurate and complete list. Sports, tragedies, diseases, celebrities, series and even game cheats all paraded before the eyes of Google Search.

What captured the world’s attention

Apparently, the world had a curious obsession with Pharrell Williams’ hat. Many wanted to buy it, and others just needed to know exactly what type of hat it was. But Pharrell’s “boom” this year wasn’t solely due to his hat; his hits from the previous year, “Happy” and the collaboration with Daft Punk on “Get Lucky”, gave him the perfect boost.

Science also had its keywords this year, but one stood above the rest: “Rosetta.” Its arrival at the comet was a bit turbulent, but after flying through the cold of space for more than a decade, it deserved to make some noise. We covered that difficult mission earlier.

In sports, the World Cup was the star. Germany’s crushing defeat of Brazil, the fact that soccer briefly displaced basketball in the United States, and the meteoric rise of James Rodríguez were among the highlights.

All this and more forms part of what was most searched on Google during 2014. With so much information available, the Mountain View giant could only offer an interactive portal that’s quite easy to navigate. The data is presented in several levels, with personalized entries on each one, but anyone looking for a general idea will find it in the section dedicated to 2014 trends. For reasons of public knowledge, actress Jennifer Lawrence took the number one spot among celebrities. Global news was dominated by the Ebola outbreak, the terrorist activities of ISIS, and the two Malaysia Airlines tragedies. As expected, Robin Williams was the most searched among those who left us, Game of Thrones won the series duel, and the gaming universe crowned none other than Flappy Bird.

Still more to explore

There’s more to see. Did Yuna Kim get robbed of her gold in Sochi? Will we see the Ice Bucket Challenge again? People also searched a lot about the Moon, and if we add what the Rosetta probe and the movie Interstellar triggered, there’s no doubt that space exploration in general passed through millions of keyboards. Spend a few minutes browsing it... if you can really spare them. The most searched on Google during 2014 is fabulous, and deserves every second you can give it.
