One of the things I enjoy most about my daily browsing is when I get the chance to unearth treasures from the past to share them with today's readers. That's exactly the case with the Rose & Camellia trilogy, unique in its kind, whose first installment I already covered TEN YEARS AGO. Oh God, I feel old! But that's how good, fun, and different these little works of art are. They deserve not one, but two articles on NeoTeo.

Nigoro, the developer behind Rose & Camellia, is also the creator of the super classic La-Mulana (2005), a game that got a sequel just a few months ago (which you can get on Steam). But we're not here to talk about La-Mulana, but about his lesser-known games, the ones I like to call "the aristocratic slapping games".

Rose & Camellia: Aristocratic Slap Fights

Because that's what the Rose & Camellia saga is all about: giving (and dodging) slaps. The odyssey begins in the first part of the saga, when Reiko (the protagonist) marries Shunsuke, the heir of the Tsubakikoji dynasty. When Shunsuke dies and with his last breath gives you a rose, the rest of the women in the family don't want anything to do with you. You're too vulgar to inherit the Tsubakikoji fortune, even though it's yours for being the "eldest daughter of the family".

In the second part of Rose & Camellia, you play as Saori, the youngest of the Tsubakikoji sisters. After Reiko claimed her place, Saori has led a life of misfortunes and humiliations. No more! It's time to restore your honor! And the same formula applies: slap for slap, you must climb the family ranks until you reach the final duel.

At the moment, that's the end of the Tsubakikoji dynasty's story, but there's a third game in the saga: Rose & Camellia & La-Mulana. Here you play as Mulbruk, the heroine of La-Mulana, Nigoro's classic, and you'll face many of the game's characters, in pure slap duels.

How to Play Rose & Camellia

Of course, being such original games, they have a rather unique control system. So pay close attention! Each encounter is turn-based. One turn you get to throw slaps, the other you must dodge your opponent's slaps. When the bar at the top left moves to the left, it's your turn. When it moves to the right, it's your opponent's turn.

At the top left, the turn bar, the most important thing in the game and the one you should pay the most attention to.

When it's your turn, a button (Attack) will be enabled at the bottom right; you must click it to perform your attack. When you click it, you must immediately draw an arc from the button to the cheek of your opponent. When it's the opponent's turn, an evasion button (Evasion) will be enabled at the bottom left. Similarly, you must click it and draw an arc to your character. If you do it correctly, you'll dodge the blow. Sometimes, if you dodge successfully, you'll be able to counterattack, but be careful: if you mess it up, you're left exposed to a hit with no chance to dodge! You control everything with the mouse.

GAME OVER

The winning strategy is not to panic. If your turn is about to end, don't try to attack. Instead, move the pointer to the left to dodge quickly. It's important that you don't take too many hits because your life doesn't refill between duels.

From Nigoro's official page, you can not only enjoy these three games, but many others completely free of charge. They're all very good and have a unique style. Don't miss them!

ATTENTION: The games only work well on Mozilla Firefox, as they were made in Adobe Flash. On Chrome, there's a delay when clicking the buttons that makes them UNPLAYABLE.
