The Doomguy's terror campaign against the infernal hordes continues on an ever-growing number of platforms: abandoned phones, PC BIOSes, Linux distros and Sega arcade machines. But the latest project by 'kgsws' takes us inside Doom... so it runs on itself. The trick exploits some bugs present in Doom II, and once Chocolate Doom does its magic, the result is fabulous.
If you want to learn more about the endless Doom ports, sooner or later you'll have to absorb some technical details. We've previously explored the origin of its unforgettable sounds and a mini documentary with an excellent analysis of its artificial intelligence. Why is this important? Because it can lead to all kinds of tweaks, mods, tricks and shortcuts. FastDoom is an excellent example, as it allows us to achieve higher performance on machines that used to have a hard time running the original game. And that brings us to 'kgsws' YouTube channel, who recently published the only thing we were missing: Doom running inside Doom.
Doom in Doom: "Doomception"
The video begins by exploring some bugs present in Doom II and how they can be used to achieve different effects, such as night vision goggles wrapped in flames. But later, the true star of the video appears: code execution. With this possibility on the table, 'kgsws' decided to modify a copy of Chocolate Doom to start from inside Doom II, and in turn load an independent session. What does 'independent' mean? We need twice the RAM for everything to work, but we can take control of that game by pressing F12.
Unfortunately, this mod doesn't have sound (for now), but 'kgsws' took the trouble to create an entire cinema room so that the 'projection' of Doom II on one of the walls would be more realistic. As if that weren't enough, he also managed to run Heretic inside Doom and introduce a variant of Asteroids that uses Doom II's sounds. The code and WADs are on GitHub, and if you want to experiment, you know what to do.
