Toy Story 3 IRL: The Complete Movie in Stop Motion with Real Toys

Any fan of a movie, a video game, or an entire franchise can pour their resources into consuming associated merchandise, but then there are those who launch titanic projects and don't stop until they see them completed. Two such fans are Morgan and Mason McGrew, who recently published on YouTube their shot-by-shot recreation of the classic Toy Story 3, using real toys, stop motion, and a lot of clay.

Fan films. Projects made with pure love in some cases, and central pieces of legal disputes in others. Many filmmakers sought support through platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, and even with thousands of dollars of backing, took years to share their results. That said, how can we not be amazed by a project that reproduces in real life one of the most popular animated movies of the last ten years? Of course, I'm talking about Toy Story 3.

Morgan and Mason McGrew, two brothers from Iowa, began their recreation of Toy Story 3 in the American summer of 2011, and published the final version over the last weekend. Morgan explains that they both saw the movie on its opening night, and it immediately became their favorite, followed by their inevitable obsession. In 2015 they shared their replica of Andy's room (which went viral), and their two trailers have accumulated five million views.

The result? An hour and a half of pure stop motion (filmed with an iPhone!), real toys from the franchise, a good amount of clay, and the original voices of the movie. At this point, anyone would think Disney/Pixar would rip their hearts out with pliers, but it's not the first time someone has adapted Toy Story. In 2013, filmmakers Pauley Jonason and Jesse Perrotta did the same with the first movie in the saga and Pixar gave the green light for the reuse of their resources.

Will the same happen with Toy Story 3 IRL? We hope so. Disney can be a little too dense when it comes to defending its franchises, but it's clear that the McGrew brothers' project has no commercial objectives.
