UnScreen: An Easy Way to Remove the Background from a Video

Your next great viral meme might be just around the corner, and all you need to start is a video with a transparent background. Remember Shia LaBeouf's "Do It"? Many professional programs will let you achieve something similar, but if the video is already recorded and there's no green screen, you might want to try UnScreen, a new service that lets you remove the background from a video or animated GIF easily, without downloading additional software.

Video editing presents itself as a demanding and intimidating practice. You just have to hear YouTubers say they invest entire days in post-production before publishing their content, and that's more than enough to think twice. However, there are many users out there who want to achieve specific goals with a short, without drowning in the natural complexity of professional software.

How to remove the background from a video with UnScreen

The process is very simple: Find a GIF, or upload your own video in MP4, WebM, Ogg, or GIF format. Wait a moment, and the result will appear on screen. The UnScreen interface lets you quickly compare between the original and the processed video, as well as replace the background with solid colors, animations (you can choose from the list, or upload your own material), and images. If you are satisfied with the processing, the free version of UnScreen enables its download as GIF, animated PNG, or a ZIP file with the frames inside. The final version has a watermark in the lower right corner.

Depending on the video and the amount of movement, UnScreen can do a very good job, or make a couple of mistakes. In the case of Darth Vader (we thank him for his collaboration), the algorithm makes his hand disappear for several frames, although the overall result could be called correct. I imagine that with a series of additional optimizations, UnScreen will be much more precise, but the priority of its developers is to work on Pro editing, which will allow downloading videos, working in high definition, and accessing its API.
