We first talked about it in December 2013. Eight months later, we announced its completion. And now, we are very close to seeing it in the market thanks to platforms like the new MacBook and the updated Chromebook Pixel. The most important thing about the USB Type C connector is its reversible design, but the tricks it has up its sleeve are quite varied.
The history of computing has presented us with a wide variety of standards, but very few have achieved success similar to that of USB. We know well that it is not a perfect solution, and in some cases its efficiency leaves much to be desired, however, it would be madness to deny its effectiveness. Keyboards, mice, printers, cameras, scanners, monitors, smartphones, tablets, audio equipment, external storage, emergency batteries, chargers... USB technology is undoubtedly everywhere. The idea of changing it might worry millions of users, and this is not lost on the introduction of new ports like Type C. So, why do we need it? What are its direct benefits? How will it get along with current devices?
What makes USB Type C special?
To begin with, USB Type C is a reversible connector. Gone are the jokes about quantum states or cables in the fourth dimension, and just like with the Apple Lightning, all users will be able to plug it in correctly “on the first try”. Next is its transfer capacity. Combined with version 3.1 of the USB specification, Type C can transfer data at a maximum speed of ten gigabits per second. Thirdly, it adapts wonderfully to video. Several manufacturers confirmed the development of adapters to use VGA, DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort devices, but we should also not forget the possibility of transmitting video from a smartphone or tablet to the PC, and vice versa. And then we find its power functions. At first we had serious doubts about USB Type C on this point, but all sources agree: the connector is capable of providing up to 100 watts. Part of this capacity has already been evidenced by the chargers for the new MacBook (29 watts) and the Chromebook Pixel.
Backwards compatibility
Finally, USB Type C is backwards compatible with previous ports. With the help of a small adapter, all your flash drives, external disks, beverage coolers and office missile launchers will work without a hitch. In addition to Apple and Google, we have already seen companies like SanDisk and LaCie develop products with the new port. Honestly, I expected a much slower adoption by the industry, but I am glad I was wrong.
