The story tells that Josh Wardle, a software engineer from Brooklyn, decided to create a word game for his partner, named Wordle (Wardle, Wordle?). After a few months of private “beta testing” so to speak, the game reached the family WhatsApp group, and all its members became obsessed. The next step for Wardle was to create the web version, debuting in October 2021.
In early November, Wordle didn't exceed a hundred participants. Two months later, it crossed the barrier of 300 thousand players. What's most impressive? There is no competitive mode, no difficulty levels, nor any strange variants. In fact, the official Wordle page doesn't even have advertising. What exactly is it about, and what do we have to do to play Wordle?
How to Play Wordle, the Word Game That Has Taken the Web by Storm
- Your goal is to guess an English word made up of five letters. You have six attempts.
- You start with a random word, and its letters will take three colors: Gray, yellow, and green.
- Gray means the letter is not in the word.
- A yellow letter is part of the word, but in the wrong position.
- Green letters appear in the word and occupy the correct position.
- A word can repeat more than one green letter.
- The keyboard at the bottom marks used letters, which helps us eliminate options.
And that's it. You try a word, discover letters, adjust your strategy, and try another word until you discover your goal or run out of attempts. Win or lose, the game keeps a record of your games (as long as you don't delete cookies) and presents a countdown to unlock the next game. Yes: Wordle limits sessions to one per day.
This artificial barrier not only neutralizes possible productivity conflicts, but also amplifies word of mouth.
