It's hard to imagine anyone getting tired of Wordle given its massive popularity and the official limit of one game per day, but after automatic generators and its deep analysis on YouTube, the idea of looking for new challenges under this format makes a lot of sense. That brings us to Nerdle, a variant of Wordle with math in which we must guess the final equation, and the position of each of its elements.
If there's something we've learned about Wordle recently, it's that it's not a new concept. The web has dug up all kinds of variants in the last 30 or 40 years that use similar rules, and even one of them was on a television show.
However, the current version has the world eating out of its hand, and its one-game-per-day frequency always makes us come back for more. Now, what if we want to increase the difficulty? Obviously, nothing stops us from enabling Hard mode or generating nightmare Wordles, but today we're going in a different direction by exploring Nerdle, a Wordle with math.
Nerdle: An Excellent Math-based Wordle Variant
The rules of Nerdle aren't complicated, though they need a quick review: We have six attempts like in the original Wordle, but the equation is made up of eight elements, which can be numbers from 0 to 9, the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), and the equals sign. Our mission, if we choose to accept it, is to place the numbers/signs in the exact position and reach the correct result.
If a number or sign is green, its location is correct. If it's violet, it exists but occupies another position, and if it appears in black, it doesn't exist. The equation can repeat numbers and operations, but there must always be an equals sign before the result, and after that sign only numbers exist. Nerdle obeys the order of operations, and also allows commutability (for example, if the result is 10+20=30, entering 20+10=30 is valid), unless it's deactivated.
Some of Nerdle's equations come together quite easily, while others torture us all the way to the last step, exactly what we'd expect from a Wordle with math. Nerdle is an excellent addition to our casual games list, and I hope its popularity continues to grow.
