In a year full of cinematic disappointments, Alien: Romulus did the job, and did it well. On December 3, the Fede Álvarez film will receive its official home release on DVD, Blu-ray, and Blu-ray Ultra HD... but there's more: 20th Century Studios confirmed the release of a limited edition VHS, celebrating the franchise's 45 years.
I was 11 years old. The nearest video store had received several VHS copies of Alien 3. One of them ended up in my hands. I spent two nights with nightmares. 10/10, I'd do it all over again.
Why deny it? Some of our best movie memories were only possible thanks to the VHS format. Questionable quality, copies of dubious origin, tracking playing hero and villain at the same time... those details disappeared with the arrival of optical media, but VHS could be wonderful under optimal conditions.
And now, all cinephiles / collectors / enthusiasts of magnetic storage will have a new opportunity thanks to the Alien franchise, and the announcement from 20th Century Studios. Alien: Romulus, the latest installment that hit the big screen last August, will receive a limited edition VHS.
Alien: Romulus Gets a VHS Edition in 2024
The reason is simple: Beyond the tape's collectible value, the truth is that Alien turned 45 years old (technically, that happened on May 25) and they decided to celebrate the event in this way. The box features art by Matt Ferguson (his works are truly fabulous), but we also find a key technical detail: The film was processed in 4:3 fullscreen format, perfect for watching on our old cathode-ray tube televisions.
Apparently, the last Alien film to receive a VHS release was Alien vs. Predator from 2004, and the last one in general (as long as we're talking about Hollywood) was A History of Violence with Viggo Mortensen. Unfortunately, we have no data on the price of Alien: Romulus on VHS, but we won't have to wait too long. Its release will be on December 3, alongside DVD, Blu-ray, and Blu-ray Ultra HD.
