For ordinary phone-free calls and texts, Apple Watch Ultra 4 is the closer fit; Garmin fēnix 9 Pro inReach uses Garmin Messenger and satellite tools instead. The trade-off is not just connectivity: Apple’s battery figures describe several distinct test modes, while Garmin’s reported 31-day rating is for smartwatch mode on the 51mm AMOLED model.
Two different meanings of phone-free
Apple Watch Ultra 4 can make conventional calls and send texts without the iPhone nearby when the watch has cellular capability, an active compatible carrier plan and cellular coverage. Apple introduced Ultra 4 with GPS + Cellular and announced a U.S. starting price of $799 on September 9, 2026 (Apple’s announcement).
The Garmin fēnix 9 Pro inReach follows a different communication model. Reported descriptions of its LTE-M calling specify Garmin Messenger, not calls to conventional phone numbers or cellular SMS; the recipient needs compatible service. Eligible inReach models also offer satellite messages, check-ins and SOS functions.
| Product | Phone-free communication | Battery figure and test context |
| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Conventional calls and texts over cellular with an active compatible plan and coverage. | Up to 50 hours in a mixed-use test with 40 hours connected to an iPhone by Bluetooth and 10 hours of cellular use. Separate workout modes are rated for up to 18, 25 or 45 hours. |
| Garmin fēnix 9 Pro inReach 51mm AMOLED | Reported LTE-M calls use Garmin Messenger; satellite messaging, check-ins and SOS are available on eligible inReach models. | Reported up to 31 days in smartwatch mode. |
Apple satellite SMS still depends on an iPhone
Cellular calls and texts can work while the paired iPhone is elsewhere, but Apple’s satellite messaging has additional requirements. Apple says Ultra 3 and later need a paired iPhone 14 or later and an active network plan associated with the watch. Apple lists satellite messaging in the U.S., subject to device, software and market conditions; it is free for two years after activation.
For satellite SMS specifically, the paired iPhone must remain powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or a mobile network, even if it is not nearby. That makes satellite SMS different from leaving the iPhone at home and using the watch’s regular cellular service. (Apple’s satellite-message requirements)
Battery ratings measure different things
Apple rates Ultra 4 for up to 50 hours in a mixed-use test that includes 40 hours of Bluetooth connection to an iPhone and 10 hours of cellular use. That figure is not a continuous phone-free cellular test.
For workout tracking, Apple gives three separate ratings: up to 18 hours in standard mode, 25 hours in Extended Workout and 45 hours in Max Extended Workout. These workout modes were tested without an iPhone. Extended and Max Extended enable Low Power Mode; Max Extended also disables alerts and splits. (Apple’s battery information)
Garmin’s reported figure is up to 31 days for the fēnix 9 Pro inReach 51mm AMOLED in smartwatch mode. It describes a different use case from Apple’s mixed-use and workout figures, rather than continuous LTE, satellite messaging or GPS workout use.
A Spanish-language field test published April 25, 2024, recorded an Apple Watch Ultra 2 battery drop from 78% to 42% over about two hours while LTE, GPS workout tracking and Bluetooth audio ran together. The test’s estimate was roughly 5.5 hours at that same drain rate—a result tied to that Ultra 2 session and workload.
The reported U.S. Garmin cost over 12 paid months
Apple announced a U.S. starting price of $799 for Apple Watch Ultra 4. Reported U.S. pricing for the Garmin fēnix 9 Pro inReach 51mm is $1,399.99. Reported monthly rates are $7.99 for Garmin’s Enabled plan and $49.99 for Premium.
Adding 12 paid months to the Garmin watch price gives $1,495.87 with Enabled ($1,399.99 + 12 × $7.99) or $1,999.87 with Premium ($1,399.99 + 12 × $49.99), before taxes and additional usage. Reported plan terms say Enabled bills separately for satellite messages and certain requests, while Premium includes unlimited supported satellite messaging. These Garmin totals cover hardware and plan charges; they do not include an Apple carrier plan.
Which phone-free setup fits your routine?
Choose Apple Watch Ultra 4 if you want conventional calls and texts from your wrist while the iPhone stays behind, and you can use a compatible carrier plan where cellular coverage is available. Its satellite SMS option has a separate paired-iPhone requirement.
Choose Garmin fēnix 9 Pro inReach if its Messenger calling and outdoor satellite features fit your communication needs, and the reported smartwatch-mode battery rating matters more to you than an Apple-style phone-number calling experience. The two watches use different communication models, so the right fit depends on how you plan to stay connected.
