Yes, camera and smartphone manufacturers can tell us wonders about their new sensors, but why not build one? YouTuber Sean Hodgins admits it's not easy even at a 32 by 32 pixel scale. However, if you enjoy soldering just over a thousand components onto a PCB and spending an entire weekend hunting bugs, you might want to follow the same path.
The Hardest Kind of DIY
There are DIY projects that at first seem to demand whole hours and end up resolved in a few minutes, and others that suffer the opposite effect. But then there are those that offer no mercy at all at any moment and push our sanity to the limit. Of course, the pleasure and satisfaction of seeing them work correctly is unmatched, and from a certain point of view, justify the combination of frustration and suffering. Getting Started with digiOBSCURA
The first step is to visit Sean Hodgins's channel and explore all the material published about his project digiOBSCURA. His guide on Instructables is quite detailed, but that doesn't free us from some advanced requirements. You'll need to print your own parts in 3D (and make adjustments to the original design), program Arduino, and work with very small surface-mount components. The complete sensor consists of 1,024 elements, and even with previous experience, its installation took Sean two and a half hours of work.

The use of printed enclosures and custom PCBs makes things much easier, but at the same time raises the final cost of the project. Another fundamental detail is the lens. Sean "sacrificed" an old, already damaged Canon lens, and recommends using something with a maximum magnification of 2x or 3x, otherwise the distance relative to the sensor will be too large.
What to Expect (and Not Expect)
Finally, a humble reminder: Nobody will get quality images with this sensor and its camera. We're talking about barely 1,024 pixels, 16 times less than the amount present in Game Boy Camera from 1998. The simple fact of obtaining an image with digiOBSCURA (no matter how bad it is) is already an extraordinary achievement, and that's the direction you should aim for if you decide to reproduce the project.
