Steam Frame has no single play path for your whole Steam library: some games run on the headset, while PC VR games stream from a gaming PC. It offers two kinds of on-device play, native VR and flat-screen Steam games, plus streamed PC VR. The distinction tells you when a gaming PC is part of the setup.
Three ways to play Steam games on Steam Frame
VR.org describes three separate routes. The game either runs on the headset or runs on a PC and streams to it.
| Play path | Where the game runs | Gaming PC required? | Examples or scope |
| Native VR | On the headset | No | Beat Saber; Half-Life 2: VR Mod |
| Flat-screen Steam games | On the headset, displayed on a virtual screen | No | Persona 3 Reload; Celeste |
| PC VR streaming | On a gaming PC, streamed to the headset | Yes | SteamVR games in your PC library |
For flat-screen games, VR.org says SteamOS uses Proton and FEX to translate x86 games for the headset’s ARM processor; the games appear on a virtual screen. VR.org identifies the processor as a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. This path is still on-device play, unlike PC VR streaming.

What Valve’s Great on Frame catalog covers
Valve’s Great on Frame catalog identifies its displayed category as native Steam Frame execution and says the listed games were tested for a strong standalone experience. That category concerns games running on the headset, not PC VR streamed from a computer.
VR.org reported 233 titles in the catalog on October 23, 2026: 93 native VR games and 140 flat-screen games. The same outlet reported 131 titles on Steam Frame’s September 14, 2026 launch date, followed by 102 additions through October 23, including 82 flat-screen games. These are reported catalog figures, not a count of every Steam game that can be streamed from a PC.
VR.org also reported certification targets of 72 frames per second at 1,728 × 1,728 pixels per eye for native VR. It said native titles below 1,440 × 1,440 were marked Unsupported. For flat-screen games, it reported a target of 720p at 30 frames per second.
Platform support does not guarantee every game or app
Valve’s Steamworks documentation lists support for SteamVR and OpenXR, along with execution models for Windows and Linux PC titles and native ARM64 Android-based APKs. No: those platform and format labels do not guarantee that every Steam game or Android app works on Steam Frame. Valve describes the Great on Frame entries separately as games tested for standalone play.
Controller mappings can also vary by game. A Steam Frame community commenter reported that games without explicit Frame support may use Quest-like SteamVR emulation, sometimes duplicating button functions; the commenter said mappings can depend on the game and SteamVR input settings. Other commenters described difficulty configuring extra buttons, while some valued the gamepad-style layout for VR mods and games adapted from flat-screen play.
