Why Disk Cleanup Still Matters
Freeing up disk space is one of the most basic maintenance operations any user can perform. Some people argue that cleaning disks is no longer necessary due to the favorable cost-density ratio of storage drives, but I'm afraid I will never agree with that view. When it comes to managing space, Windows is… problematic. A simple round of Windows Update updates can generate several gigabytes in temporary files, and Redmond's solution to avoid conflicts is claiming more space. As if that weren't enough, the classic Disk Cleanup is now deprecated, and it is very likely that it will disappear completely in future versions (I hope I'm wrong).
This detail leaves us at the doorstep of developments like Comet, one of the simplest and most faithful clones of Disk Cleanup we have seen. There is no installer, nor anything like it. The only major difference (for now) is that it displays part of the text in English and has a different icon. The rest depends on the Disk Cleanup API itself, and Comet's creator indicates that his application is a good example of backward compatibility because that API hasn't been modified in 20 years. Of course, some cleaning operations require elevated privileges, but with a simple click you can run Comet as administrator and access those "hidden" sections.

Apparently, Comet's creator plans to incorporate command line support, which in turn will enable a certain level of automation. Comet is open source, you can easily load it on any maintenance USB drive, and it yields a perfect result on VirusTotal. The only technical aspect to highlight is that Comet has some limitations in its functions under Windows 7 and earlier, but in those cases it's always better to use the native Cleanup tool.
