Valve released City Never Sleeps, a major Deadlock update, on September 29, 2026. That same day, the game reached an all-time Steam concurrent-player peak of 228,086. The update revamped the map and neutral creatures, introduced six heroes and brought interface, quality-of-life and accessibility changes.

Deadlock’s City Never Sleeps adds six heroes

The update centers on a visual overhaul of the map and its neutral creatures. It also includes six new heroes, HUD updates, quality-of-life additions and accessibility options.

A spooky New York map, new heroes and Haunts

The map takes inspiration from a stylized, eerie New York City with an early-to-mid-20th-century atmosphere. Its three main lanes received visual refreshes, with four themed districts: theatre, Chinatown, haunted and plaza.

The six named heroes are Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba and Violet. Players could vote in-game for which hero would roll out first.

The update replaced the familiar neutral creeps with creatures called Haunts. The named types are Specimen, Past Dues, Gutter Ghouls, Barrel Mimics, Stage Hands, Crabbage Pots, Festival Spirit, Shrooms and Underhands.

New dialogue, interface changes and accessibility options

The Doorman’s exchanges with other Deadlock characters appear alongside character portraits and subtitles; the compilation contains 39 conversations, including 24 new exchanges and 15 expanded conversations.

The update brought more than 10,000 new non-ping voice lines and a dialogue player. Custom lobbies can accommodate up to eight spectators. Interface and communication changes include clearer health bars, improved stat indicators, a match event feed, ping-system changes and a parry-cooldown display near the reticle.

Accessibility options include enemy-color adjustments, automatic movement and firing, and subtitles for voice-over. A dialogue compilation features 39 complete conversations: 24 new exchanges and 15 expanded conversations.

Deadlock recorded 228,086 concurrent players on September 29

The 228,086 figure is Deadlock’s all-time peak for players online at the same time on Steam. The record and the City Never Sleeps release share a date: September 29, 2026.

What Valve says is still in development

Valve said progression and hero and hideout customization were in development and could change substantially in response to feedback. Major item redesigns or additions and alternate game modes remained speculative and subject to playtesting; Valve had not established that those ideas would ship.
