One of the many decisions Microsoft made after the launch of Windows 8 was to “redesign” its classic games, forcing users to obtain new copies through the official store. Needless to say, the previous, local versions provide a much more polished and familiar experience for players, but they are only available on Windows 7. Fortunately, someone took the trouble to create an installer with all those classics, now compatible with Windows 8.x and Windows 10. Hurry up before the folks in Redmond suffer a syncope…
Any user can understand a drastic change when the technical benefits are far superior; however, changes based on “internal policy whims” only serve to annoy the user and force them to seek alternatives. Windows 8 had several of those whims, which at this point are not worth reviewing, but they reached such small details that it’s hard to believe for a moment.
Windows 7 Games on Windows 10
A solid example is the classic games package that accompanied all versions of Windows prior to Windows 7. I say “accompanied” because starting with Windows 8, those users who wanted their daily dose of Minesweeper or Solitaire were faced with the “requirement” of downloading new versions with integrated advertising, or adopting a subscription scheme that eliminates it entirely. In other words, give away the operating system to put a price on everything else. “Software as a service”.
But there is a solution. In fact, there are several if we count each of the classic Windows games. Different tutorials on the Web explain the process step by step to “extract” a copy of the games in Windows 7 and make them run on Windows 8.x or later, since they have several dependencies. Fortunately, the folks at Winaero combined efforts with several users from the famous MyDigitalLife forum and created an installation pack that even includes several multiplayer titles like Backgammon and Checkers. There are no strange modules or inserted advertising in the installer. Multiplayer titles may experience the occasional connection error, but I must admit that they all work quite well, and they also received compatibility with the new “Anniversary Update” of Windows 10.
Another point to consider is that you don’t need to install the complete package. If you only want games like Chess Titans, Solitaire, FreeCell, and Minesweeper, you can do so without any issues. Personally, I would hurry to download this package. Technically, Microsoft can claim copyright on this “redistribution” of the games, but the masterminds in Redmond must understand that they made a mistake. There was no need to touch the classic games.
