We've already shared several examples of hidden games before. Google offers game doodles that will make you lose hours of productivity, Facebook does its thing with a mini chess in Messenger, and the “Google dinosaur” is outright addictive. However, today we have something very different: Fontemon, a development by Michael Mulet that works as an unmistakable parody of Pokémon, but with an extra twist: it's a font!
One of the most fascinating experiments involving video games is the execution of Doom on unusual platforms. No matter how strange the device, someone will take the code of that endless classic and make it work one way or another.
But the story doesn't end there by any means. Placing games in odd places is an older hobby than we think: Microsoft hid a pinball and a flight simulator in Office 97, Maniac Mansion can be played in full inside Day of the Tentacle, and four Atari classics are available in Call of Duty: Black Ops II. What's next on the list? A font! That's right, welcome to Fontemon.
Fontemon: A Pokémon Parody in an OTF Font
Fontemon is a creation by Michael Mulet, and to play locally you must do two things: Install the font (right-click on it, select Install from the context menu), and use it in a compatible program (GIMP is a good example). The alternative is to use the Web Font Player on the official page, and explore its content there.
Now, I say “explore” because you're going to have a good time inside Fontemon. Beyond the process of choosing a Fontemon (spoiler, you receive all three anyway), visiting the gyms and winning the trophy, this parody is packed with hilarious dialogues, secret codes, fake endings, and more. A normal playthrough is supposed to last about 20 minutes, but discovering everything in the game might take four or five times longer.
How exactly do you play? Well… you must type. The sentences don't have to be coherent: repeating a single letter is enough to advance the text. Don't make the mistake of “skipping over” certain sections that require pressing a specific key, though it's not the end of the world. In fact, there's no way to lose in Fontemon, and if you make a bad decision, simply pressing Backspace is enough to undo it. Give it a try! It's much more entertaining than it seems.
