One recurring complaint from console gamers is that their keyboard-and-mouse opponents have an unfair advantage, bordering on cheating. However, when they try that combo themselves, it's very hard to go back to a gamepad. That's what happened to the YouTuber from the channel Tech Yesterday, but in search of a definitive solution, he created a kind of hybrid that combines the benefits of analog stick movement with the superior precision of a conventional mouse.
The Magic of Cross-Play and Traditional Controls
You can love it or hate it, but cross-play is here to stay. Players on mobile devices, computers, and consoles around the world share arenas, battles, even entire universes. While there are specific restrictions, the idea of playing anytime, anywhere, and on whatever hardware, has ceased to be an exclusive benefit and become an elemental feature of modern online games. Now, the fact that a title manages to adapt doesn't mean the controls do the same...
In other words, no matter how good you are with a gamepad, the keyboard-and-mouse combo sits a step above, and with cross-play on the table, complaints abound. So, what can you do besides yelling “they cheat” and “it's not fair”? The YouTuber from Tech Yesterday is essentially a gamepad player, but after four or five months with keyboard and mouse, he declared it was “almost impossible” to go back to the control's lack of precision. His alternative? Hacking an Xbox 360 gamepad to create a very special hybrid.
The Gamepad-Mouse Hybrid
Basically, his idea is to fuse the precision of “mouse aim” with the general movement of the gamepad. The first step was to miniaturize the mouse until obtaining what we could call a thumb mouse, composed of the sensor, the USB cable, and nothing else. This process required exploring dozens of mice to find the right PCB (that is, with the correct dimensions, and that can also be cut).
The second part focused on creating the equivalent of a mousepad, installing a new surface on the gamepad. The buttons were redirected to the back and bottom of the controller, and replaced with mechanical keyboard switches, which allowed removing the right stick and freeing up a lot of space. With the d-pad transformed into small independent buttons, the thumb mouse has what it needs to develop its full movement.
The best part? Tech Yesterday didn't rest on his laurels, and struck again with a second edition. The main optimization was reducing the mouse further, separating the sensor from its PCB and using cables to redirect the signals. By using generic Xbox 360 gamepads as a base, it also guarantees a certain ease of hacking (since they are very similar to each other), and of course, lower costs. Some believe this controller is the future of video games. Others think they've already seen a similar solution with the Steam Controller.
Fortunately, there are solutions for all tastes. Today you can use your gamepad as a mouse, connect a PlayStation 4 gamepad to your PC, and much more. What do you think? Leave a comment!
