A New Kind of Hunt

A week ago, Google officially announced the launch of its ARCore augmented reality platform for Android. To take advantage of this technology, Sony Pictures plans to launch Ghostbusters World, the augmented reality game of the Ghostbusters. The game will be similar to Pokémon Go but in the world of the Ghostbusters franchise, where you'll have to fight and capture different types of ghosts taken from the films, comics, and other media.

“The Ghostbusters universe is rich in characters, and Ghostbusters World is the perfect way to experience these characters in a completely new dimension,” commented the director of the original film, Ivan Reitman.

An Official and Expansive Game

Sony Pictures Entertainment owns the rights to the Ghostbusters franchise, and the game is being developed in collaboration with Ghost Corps, the company of Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd that oversees the license ties, and 4:33 Creative Lab, the mobile game distributor and developer. Since the game is 100% official, we won't only see characters and ghosts from the two original films, but also from the recent reboot, animated series, comics, video games, and theme parks. Ghostbusters World will also feature new characters and ghosts.

Gameplay and Your Ghost-Hunting Gear

The gameplay will let you use a range of equipment to hunt and contain ghosts, including the PKE meter (to detect how powerful a ghost is), the nuclear proton stream (the only weapon capable of harming and holding a ghost), and the trap (to absorb ghosts and capture them inside). Ghostbusters World is being developed by Ghost Corps along with 4:33 Creative Lab and will be available on iOS and Android systems. The game won't be available at the launch of ARCore, but it's expected to launch sometime in 2018.
