In the year 2048, the human race is forced to leave Earth after decades of losing against Godzilla and other giant monsters. That's how humanity ends up on the planet Tau Ceti, but upon arrival they discover this world has become uninhabitable. As living conditions on the ship deteriorate, a young man named Haruo leads a movement to return to Earth and reclaim it from the monsters. The ship successfully makes the return trip, but the crew discovers that twenty thousand years have passed and Earth's ecosystem has evolved, with Godzilla reigning over the new food chain.

Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters is the thirty-second movie in the Godzilla franchise, after the release of Shin Godzilla, and the first to be animated. Just by watching the trailer, there's no doubt that CG animation is ideal for this type of movies, with the anime version of Godzilla being surprisingly effective and terrifying. In fact, this is the biggest version of the king of the monsters, with a size reaching 300 meters. For now, anime fans can rest easy as they will enjoy incredible battles between kaijus, ships, and mechas.

Toho Animation announced that the movie would be the first of a new trilogy, with a sequel already scheduled for release in May 2018 that will feature Mechagodzilla. Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters features the voices of Mamoru Miyano, Takahiro Sakurai, and Kana Hanazawa, among others. Produced by Toho Animation and animated by Polygon Pictures, the movie is co-directed by Kōbun Shizuno (Knights of Sidonia) and Hiroyuki Seshita, with a script by Gen Urobuchi. Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters premiered in Japanese theaters last November but will now have its worldwide premiere via Netflix on January 17, 2018.
