Independence Day: Resurgence Trailer
Independence Day Resurgence

It has been almost two decades since the release of Independence Day, and next year the sequel finally arrives. With familiar faces and some new ones, the aliens return to Earth seeking revenge in this trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence.

Twenty years after the events of the first movie, humanity has recovered from the attack and the nations of Earth have collaborated on a massive defense system to protect the planet, using technology salvaged from the remains of the alien forces. However, the aliens were able to send a distress signal before their final defeat, leading to a new invasion with a larger group of alien ships coming to Earth to threaten the human race once more. Several characters from Independence Day return for this sequel. Unfortunately, one of the most significant absences is that of Will Smith, due to Fox's refusal to pay the salary the actor demanded. In fact, 20th Century Fox launched an interactive movie website that lets you investigate what has happened in the twenty years since the 1996 invasion. One of the most striking details dates back to 2007, where it explains that Colonel Steven Hiller (the character played by Smith) died in an accident during a test of an experimental ship with hybrid human-alien technology. An interesting justification.

Independence Day: Resurgence will focus on the next generation of heroes, among them the adoptive son of Smith's character in Independence Day. In the meantime, Titan Comics announced a comic prequel set in the twenty years between the first and second movies to explain the events that occurred during that time. Let's hope this time the alien ships come better prepared and with updated antivirus. The movie features a cast led by Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner, reprising their original roles from the first movie. Newcomers include Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward, among others. Written and directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, Godzilla), Independence Day: Resurgence opens on June 24, 2016.
