Tumblr can be a chaotic place, but sometimes we find something that deserves to be preserved beyond a simple screenshot. The future of Tumblr is not entirely clear following the rocky sale of Yahoo! to Verizon, so it's not a bad idea to have a resource that allows for the complete backup of the images and videos published on its blogs. The program's name is TumblThree, its development is open source, and it runs portably, without local dependencies.

Why Back Up Tumblr?

On June 13, Tumblr was absorbed by Oath Inc., Verizon's new subsidiary that will manage all of the company's digital brands, including Yahoo!, Flickr, AOL, and portals like Engadget and TechCrunch. Official numbers show that Tumblr hosts more than 350 million blogs and 150 billion posts in ten years. That paints a picture of a solid platform, but Verizon has done strange things before, and if it sees something it doesn't like in Tumblr, it may take the scalpel and start cutting. At the same time, Tumblr's chaotic nature means blogs are born and die without notice. What options are there to back up our favorites?

There's not much to see in its interface, but it works very well

Getting Started with TumblThree

One of the cleanest and most compatible options is TumblThree. Its interface is Spartan, but it's very easy to use. All we need to do is enter the blog's address at the bottom, add it to the queue, and then confirm the download with the Crawl button. TumblThree enables content filtering in its Details section: if you only want the images and videos from a blog, you should leave only those two boxes checked. There is also the possibility of obtaining metadata and ignoring .gif files.

Versions and Download

The source code and the latest binaries of TumblThree are available via GitHub (click on Releases to see the links). The latest version is 1.0.7.1, but I recommend downloading the stable build 1.0.6.8, as it doesn't require a Tumblr account (1.0.7.1 requires authentication).
