Welcome to Planet SR388, a grim world where something unsettling has been discovered: floating organisms called 'metroids.' Naturally hostile, these creatures absorb the energy of their prey until they are lifeless. The Galactic Federation sent a team to study the development of this life form. After discovering it is a dangerous plague, they decided to exterminate it. The bounty hunter who will take on the job, Samus Aran, is a legend in her trade, and the incredible trailer for Metroid: Samus Returns demonstrates exactly why.
The mission in Metroid: Samus Returns is to locate the metroids and finish them off once and for all. The planet hides a maze of underground corridors filled with dangerous life forms and mechanisms of unknown purpose. Mapping the terrain will be crucial, as will exploiting the upgrades hidden in this deadly environment. For that, Samus has several tricks up her sleeve: the Morph Ball mode lets her roll like a ball; the Ice Beam freezes enemies in the air; the Grapple Beam allows her to move across uneven terrain; and the Space Jump lets her ascend with greater momentum. These and other enhancements integrate with Samus's suit, a super-advanced armor that allows her to face the most fearsome challenges.
But that's not all, as Samus will now have the Aeion abilities at her disposal. These four fantastic powers are a pulse scanner (which seeks hidden paths around you), electric armor (generating a barrier that protects against physical attacks), a multi-ray burst (improving firing power and rate), and phase displacement (slowing time around you). Also added is the possibility of counterattacks, ideal for when things get complicated. The game is compatible with the various Metroid Amiibo figures, allowing you to unlock items, new difficulty modes, and access to a gallery of artwork, illustrations, and music from Metroid II: Return of Samus.
Metroid: Samus Returns is being developed by MercurySteam together with Nintendo and will be available exclusively on Nintendo 3DS starting September 15, 2017.
