On October 30, 2026, John Romero described a new publishing agreement for Romero Games’ first-person shooter and said the project was being redesigned as a different, smaller-scope game. The new deal does not mean the earlier version will be finished unchanged: Romero said that version was conceived for a 110-person team and could not be completed with the reduced team.

The agreement comes with a different game design

Romero described the current project as a complete redesign, while saying the team is carrying some work from the earlier game into it. That includes art and weapons. The FPS was announced as a new intellectual property in 2022.

Ten developers who had been laid off reportedly returned to the project. Romero also described the new publisher as hands-off creatively, saying it would let Romero Games decide what to make.
