Mistral AI announced on October 29, 2026, that it had released the model weights for Mistral Large 4, also called Le Chonk. The open-weight download is a model checkpoint, not source code, and lets organizations inspect, customize and deploy the model on their own infrastructure. Mistral says later guardrail updates will apply to its managed API and future model versions, not automatically to checkpoints that have already been downloaded. Mistral’s announcement
NeoTeo previously covered the public API preview of Mistral Large 4. The weight release is a separate way to access the model: instead of relying on Mistral to serve it through an API, an organization can deploy its own copy.
What Mistral released on October 29
Mistral describes Large 4 as a natively multimodal model with one trillion parameters. The company says the released weights followed three additional weeks of reinforcement learning after the public preview. The weights allow organizations to modify, further train and deploy the model, subject to its license. Mistral’s announcement
Why downloaded checkpoints follow a different update path
Mistral says its monitoring of preview traffic found the model refusing black-box attacks against live targets, while the company also saw potential for the model to improve real attacks. Mistral said it was modifying its guardrails and would continue updating them. Those later changes apply to its managed API and future model versions; they do not automatically reach a downloaded checkpoint. An organization running its own copy therefore cannot rely on Mistral’s API updates to change that copy.
What Mistral’s 96.6% refusal rate measures
Mistral reports a 96.6% average refusal rate on malicious cyber prompts drawn from the cyber-related portions of JailbreakBench, StrongREJECT and AgentHarm. The figure describes the model’s average response to those benchmark prompts, not a general safety rating for every deployment. Mistral’s announcement
When the license requires a separate commercial license
The Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight License permits commercial use, modification, further training and distribution subject to its terms. A separate commercial license is required when a licensee or affiliate operates a Model-as-a-Service business and uses the model or its derivatives commercially. The license defines that service as giving a third party access for inference or post-training in a way that allows meaningful control over inputs, model parameters or training data. Read the license
The separate-license requirement has stated exclusions. It does not apply to internal use as defined by the license, end-user products where the model’s capabilities are solely embedded in specific features or harnesses, merely relaying requests to other providers’ models, or using Mistral’s official products.
