When it comes to playing multimedia content on Android, VLC Player is the number one choice for many users. However, there are always compatibility and performance details that lead us to look for alternatives, and one of the most interesting on the Play Store is NOVA Video Player, which besides being open source, is also receiving updates quite frequently.

To begin, it's enough to select the option All Videos, and then Play from the beginning, but if you prefer to create a kind of collection on your device, NOVA can download metadata from the Web (photo, title, reviews, etc.) and update descriptions quickly.
Logically, the player has the ability to get subtitles online (opensubtitles.org is its main source) or read local and embedded subtitles. The settings menu is quite extensive, but generally it is not necessary to modify anything. In case you find some compatibility detail, NOVA enables an option to force software decoding. The player also gets along wonderfully with Android TV, and includes an optimized interface for that environment.
The best option to download NOVA Video Player is the Google Play Store, but being an open source development, its use is not mandatory. The latest APK will always be available on its GitHub profile, or we can use F-Droid as an alternative.
