The original StarCraft is a gem that refuses to be forgotten. Despite the many technical challenges that an 18-year-old game must face on modern systems, its fans have shown unwavering loyalty, and even in this era of fast graphics and 4K video, they defy time in a small 640 by 480 pixel window. Fortunately, things seem to be improving a lot for the classic StarCraft next September, as Blizzard is reportedly planning an HD remaster.
This is the rumor control, here are the facts: The second part of StarCraft closed its circle last November 10 when Legacy of the Void hit the shelves. Its reception was very good, and unlike other sagas, its ending was up to the circumstances, especially regarding Raynor and Kerrigan... but I won't say more (spoilers and all that). As an "expansion", Blizzard decided to release the "Nova Covert Ops" mission pack in three parts, and if I remember correctly, it should be completed before the end of the year. It's still too early to think about a formal continuation of the StarCraft franchise, and with the popularity levels that Overwatch registers, let's say the Blizzard team is a bit busy. Now... there is "something" floating in the ether about StarCraft, and as expected, we must travel to South Korea to understand it better.
September reveal
According to the well-known local portal iNews24, multiple sources have confirmed Blizzard's intention to announce StarCraft HD during September. In theory, this remastered version will keep the game mechanics intact, but both the user interface and the overall resolution will be optimized to better adapt to modern computers. In other words, enough of "postage-stamp-sized windows" on 4K monitors. What is still not known for sure is whether StarCraft HD will receive a partial "3D treatment", or if it will stay in 2D. Why next month? The reason is simple: In September, the StarCraft II World Championship concludes with a big event in Mexico, and the plan would be to reveal the first details there, seeking greater impact.
As always in these cases, Blizzard doesn't comment on rumors or speculation, but one thing is certain: The original StarCraft remains a firm Top 10 in South Korean cybercafes, and has millions of fans in the West. Patches (official and external) have reached their limit, and if there's one game that deserves a touch of HD, it's this one. Personally, I ask only one thing: Please, don't ruin it.
