Portrait AI: Your Portrait Painted from a Photo

Back in July of last year we took a close look at AI Portraits, a portal that could turn a photo into a classic portrait. Unfortunately, that portal shut down, but the idea of using artificial intelligence to make portraits spread in no time. Today we come across Portrait.AI, a system in beta that follows the same line: upload an image and let the background algorithm turn it into an old work of art.

Nudes, films, landscapes, faces. When it comes to art, artificial intelligences are there to accept the challenge. Naturally, everything depends on how good and long their training is, but it is also possible to learn (and enjoy) from their mistakes. The best part is that projects never stop. There is always something new to see, even if it is based on a previous concept.

For example: antique portraits. A couple of months ago we explored the potential of AI Gahaku, and beyond the occasional error, the truth is that it works quite well. What is next on our list? Portrait AI, a 'web version' of the artificial intelligence platform used in the iPhone app that bears the same name (previously FaceFun). Portrait AI is in beta, and its developer recommends "low expectations".

He also warns that the server remains offline about an hour a day, and shares some essential recommendations, starting with not wearing glasses (we tested anyway), maintaining a neutral expression, and having the face as centered as possible in the frame. The glasses problem is evident when using our classic benchmark, Bill Gates. It is as if the AI got halfway, not knowing exactly what to do with that extra data. The second photograph is a nod to all fans of the series 'Dark' (I'm obsessed with that story, excuse me), and the AI's result is far superior.

As expected, Portrait AI is being bombarded, and delays in image processing are inevitable. As for privacy, its policy is standard: the system uses secondary hosting services, and temporarily stores images in a cache. Give it a try! Upload some of your public portraits, and tell us how it went.
