Within two months, the sequel to Red Dead Redemption, a classic of the last generation, is coming out. And true to its style, Rockstar has just released a video showcasing the 4K gameplay of Red Dead Redemption 2, where we detail the most important points that promise to captivate the player.
Eight years have passed since the release of Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar Games' open-world game set in the Wild West with gameplay in the best Grand Theft Auto style. It is considered one of the best games of the last generation, especially for its gameplay, soundtrack, story, and characters. And this last aspect is the starting point for Rockstar to develop Red Dead Redemption 2, a prequel to the previous title and the third game in the Red Dead franchise. This time the story focuses on Arthur Morgan, a member of the Van der Linde gang (the same gang to which John Marston, the protagonist of the previous game, also belonged).
Red Dead Redemption 2 is set in 1899, a time when America was evolving thanks to the arrival of immigrants and the expansion of civilization along the frontier, which gave way to the development of new cities and technologies. In fact, the story tries to capture the crucial moment of the end of the outlaw era and the birth of the modern world. And this is where Morgan comes in, traveling from place to place with his gang committing all kinds of criminal acts while fleeing the law and also facing other gangs.
The World of Red Dead Redemption 2
Recently Rockstar has just released a video showing the gameplay of Red Dead Redemption 2, with images captured entirely from the game that show the action within an open world and in third-person perspective. The story takes place on the American frontier, composed of ranching towns and developing cities as well as desert and mountainous landscapes to dense forests and swampy roads. Most of the time Arthur will be traveling with the gang, setting up a camp as a base. Here you can develop a bond with each member of the gang through various activities, such as providing food and supplies or playing cards with them. As you develop a bond with a particular character, you can unlock new missions and activities.
When you're outside the camp, you can roam the vast world and interact with the various characters you meet along the way and in towns. But you have to be careful because acting friendly or aggressive has consequences: you can make friends who will help you throughout the game or enemies who won't rest until they see you buried underground. And when facing enemies, hand-to-hand combat has been improved with a deeper system, while during gunfights you can use a period-appropriate arsenal with unique features and realistic behavior.
Now riding a horse won't be as simple as before, since it will depend on how you treat the animal. If you don't take good care of it, the horse will become tense during gunfights and won't respond to Morgan's commands, putting both their lives at risk. Additionally, there are now several breeds you can use, whether to have a fast steed or one to carry heavy loads like hunted animals; in the video you can see Morgan using saddlebags as an addition to the horse to carry supplies. And as for hunting, there are several predators you can catch either to provide food for the camp or to sell the skins in towns.
Apparently this sequel promises to exploit everything that couldn't be done in Red Dead Redemption, and although there are still several points to analyze, such as missions, activities, enemy gangs, and the Dead Eye shooting system that will be seen in a future video, what has been seen so far is a good sign that we are facing a new classic. Red Dead Redemption 2 is being developed by Rockstar Studios and will be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One starting October 26, 2018.
