Apple’s Mac settings turn off or restrict selected Apple Intelligence features; RemoveMacAI says its third-party project can remove local models and block further downloads. The project lists Apple silicon and macOS 27 as requirements. Its model-removal approach is not an Apple-supported uninstall workflow. For broader operating-system context, see NeoTeo’s earlier macOS 27 coverage.
Apple’s controls switch off features; RemoveMacAI says it removes models
Apple documents separate controls for Siri AI, summaries and other Apple Intelligence features, plus Screen Time restrictions for some capabilities. Those controls turn off or restrict features; Apple’s Mac user guide does not describe them as deleting downloaded model files.
RemoveMacAI says it can remove local models through Apple’s asset service and use a configuration profile to block their redownload. The project also says its changes can be undone. Those are the project’s descriptions of its own behavior.
The interface shows an Apple Intelligence control marked “Off.” The current compatibility and behavior described by the project are in its README.
The project’s author also introduced RemoveMacAI in a post about turning off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27:
Which Macs and macOS versions does the project list?
RemoveMacAI lists Apple silicon as a requirement. Its stated compatibility is:
| macOS version | Compatibility listed by RemoveMacAI |
| macOS 27.0 | Supported; the project says it was tested on this version |
| macOS 27.0.1 | Version 0.2.3 or later specified |
| macOS 26 and earlier | Not supported |
These are compatibility statements from the project. Check the macOS version on your Mac before choosing a workflow.
Which features may be affected?
RemoveMacAI says removing Apple Intelligence models may affect Siri AI, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT integration, summaries, inline predictions, Spatial Photos, Photos Clean Up, Visual Intelligence and Xcode predictive completion. It also lists natural-language Calendar editing, Shortcuts’ Use Model action, and apps that use Apple’s on-device Foundation Models framework.
The project says Dictation and its speech models remain available because they use a separate setting. Its README also notes that feature availability can vary by macOS release and app. For an overview of the feature set, see NeoTeo’s Apple Intelligence explainer.
Check storage and use the project’s documented workflow
If you are deciding whether to remove models, first check the Apple Intelligence entry in Apple menu → System Settings → General → Storage. That reading is disk storage, not RAM. Apple lists requirements of up to 14 GB for Mac models with M3 or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory, and up to 8 GB for other Apple Intelligence-enabled Macs in its support information. Those are Apple’s stated requirements, not a prediction of what a particular Mac will recover.
A practical sequence:
- Decide whether you want to switch features off or remove local models. Apple’s built-in controls manage individual features; RemoveMacAI describes a separate model-removal approach.
- Check compatibility. The project lists Apple silicon and macOS 27 support, with the version detail for macOS 27.0.1 shown in the table.
- If you use the command-line interface, install it with the documented Homebrew command:
brew install omlahore/tap/removemacai. - Check the project’s reported state and model sizes: run
removemacai status. The project says this command reports feature states and model sizes. - Use the project’s documented model-removal workflow. RemoveMacAI says it uses Apple’s asset service for model removal and a configuration profile to block further downloads. The standalone
removemacaicommand is documented as turning Apple Intelligence off. - Check Storage again after macOS has had time to delete the files. RemoveMacAI says macOS removes them on its own schedule, so the Storage reading can continue to count models until then.
The amount shown in Storage is not a guaranteed recovery figure. Apple’s listed requirements and reported readings from individual Macs describe different conditions; use the reading on your own Mac to understand its current storage category.
Reversing RemoveMacAI’s changes
RemoveMacAI documents removemacai revert to undo its changes and removemacai on to turn Apple Intelligence back on. The project says macOS may download models again when features are re-enabled.
