macOS 27 Golden Gate is a solid but consequential update: it makes Apple Intelligence more useful, gives Liquid Glass better controls, and adds practical tools to Safari, Photos, and virtualization. The catch is hard to ignore. Golden Gate requires an Apple Silicon Mac, and Apple Intelligence occupies a sizeable local footprint in installations where Apple distributes it. For an Intel Mac, this is the end of the official upgrade path.
For US users, macOS 27 is available for supported Macs. The best candidates are Apple Silicon owners who want the new AI and interface features and have enough free storage to absorb them. If you rely on an Intel Mac or old AFP-based backups, the decision is less cheerful.
What macOS 27 changes for your Mac
Golden Gate keeps the broad shape of macOS Tahoe rather than reinventing the desktop. Its meaningful changes are concentrated in four areas: Apple Intelligence, the Liquid Glass interface, everyday apps, and developer tools.
Apple Intelligence now connects more parts of the system. Siri AI combines Spotlight, local search, traditional Siri commands, Mac-context questions, and chatbot-style answers. Safari can suggest tab groups, monitor pages for changes, and create simple extensions from natural-language descriptions. Photos improves Clean Up, Extend, and Reframe, while Notes can import and export Markdown without becoming a native Markdown editor.
The release also adds USB passthrough for virtual machines, layered disk images through DiskImageKit, more flexible vmnet networking, and Apple’s OCI-compatible container tool. That last tool supports OCI images, but it is not a complete replacement for Docker Desktop or Docker Compose.
Compatibility: Intel Macs stop here
macOS 27 requires an Apple Silicon Mac with an M1 chip or newer. Intel Macs are not supported. Compatible families include the 2020 M1 MacBook Air, 2020 M1 MacBook Pro, 2020 M1 Mac mini, 2021 M1 iMac, 2023 Mac Pro, any Mac Studio, and the 2026 MacBook Neo.
Rosetta 2 remains available for Intel applications on Apple Silicon in macOS 27. The release therefore preserves a path for older software on newer Macs, but it does not extend macOS 27 itself to Intel hardware.
If you own an Intel Mac, staying on a supported earlier macOS version is the practical alternative. Some Intel Macs running macOS 15 Sequoia are expected to receive security updates through fall 2027 if Apple maintains its previous support pattern, while Safari support for some older systems is expected to continue into 2028. Those are expectations, not guaranteed dates.
The storage cost of mandatory Apple Intelligence
The biggest practical change is not a shiny feature; it is the disk space Apple Intelligence can claim. In most installations where Apple distributes the local component, Apple Intelligence is part of the baseline and the old option to remove the complete model package is gone.
On the tested M1 MacBook Air, the whole system volume used 42.92GB with Apple Intelligence enabled. macOS Tahoe 26.6.2 used 26.17GB without AI on the same machine, a difference of 16.75GB between those two states. Golden Gate used 30.98GB without AI before Internet access and 42.92GB after the models were enabled.

The local Apple Intelligence models occupied approximately 14GB on the tested M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Neo, and 22.42GB on the tested 15-inch M3 MacBook Air. Those figures make small SSD configurations much less comfortable, especially after applications, photos, developer tools, and personal files enter the equation.
Apple also says future cloud Apple Intelligence use may have limits based on the feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors. Additional usage may be available for a fee. The exact quotas, prices, and timing are not specified.
Liquid Glass is easier to live with
Liquid Glass remains the defining visual language, but Golden Gate gives you more control over it. The previous clear-or-tinted choice becomes a continuous transparency slider, ranging from highly transparent to heavily tinted, with the default setting in the middle.
The interface also gains harder title-bar dividers, more consistent window corners, edge-to-edge sidebars, and fewer decorative menu icons. These are small changes individually. Together, they make the system feel less like a translucent overlay placed on top of every window and more like a desktop with readable boundaries.
Golden Gate also extends HDR to the macOS user interface, not just external display output. Native ultrawide support reaches up to 5K and 120Hz, although the actual limit depends on the Mac’s chip, scaling, ports, and monitor standards.
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI become useful—with limits
Siri AI is the most ambitious part of Golden Gate. It can combine Spotlight, file search, traditional Siri commands, Mac-context questions, and chatbot-style responses in one interface. It can work with some app data and Control Center settings, but many requests still produce instructions rather than directly changing advanced system settings or manipulating Finder files.
Apple’s localized macOS pages list Siri AI in English on macOS in Spain and several other European markets, while the initial European Union restriction applies to iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS. For US users, the key limitation is less about regional access and more about how much work Siri AI performs locally versus through cloud processing.
The more capable AFM 3 Core Advanced model requires an M3-family processor or newer and at least 12GB of RAM. Its main benefits are more expressive Siri voices and improved dictation. The broader AFM 3 Core model is preferred over the previous model in Apple-reported evaluations for some English text and image-understanding tasks, but those figures describe Apple’s evaluation rather than an independent benchmark.
Safari, Photos, Notes, and virtualization
Safari 27 adds three especially practical tools:
- Automatic tab-group suggestions: Safari can suggest groups once at least three related tabs are open.
- Notify Me: selected pages can be checked hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly. Hourly is the maximum frequency described for the feature, and pages that require logins or complex navigation do not reliably fit the workflow.
- Describe an Extension: natural-language instructions can generate simple Safari extensions.
Photos’ Clean Up, Extend, and Reframe tools are more capable, and Apple’s cited materials list RAW 9 support for 784 camera models. Image Playground includes five styles and three aspect ratios: square, landscape, and portrait.
For developers and power users, the virtualization changes may matter more than the visual refresh. Golden Gate adds guest provisioning, flexible virtual networks, USB passthrough, custom Virtio devices for Linux guests, and DiskImageKit image layering. The new container tool supports OCI images, but its scope is narrower than a full desktop container platform.
Legacy features that no longer fit
Golden Gate removes AFP support. That affects the original backup workflow for older AirPort Time Capsule devices. AirPort Utility is also deprecated: it is no longer included with new clean installations, and its functionality is not guaranteed starting in macOS 27.
The release also deprecates encrypted HFS+ volumes and parts of hdiutil. The DVDPlayback framework is removed for developers, so apps cannot build against it; Apple says that framework will be removed in a future macOS release.
These changes will barely register if your Mac is modern and your backups use current network protocols. They matter immediately if you still depend on legacy Apple hardware or older disk-image and media workflows.
Verdict: who should upgrade now
Golden Gate is worth the upgrade for Apple Silicon users who want a more integrated Siri, better local AI tools, a more adjustable Liquid Glass interface, and stronger virtualization support. Safari’s page monitoring and tab grouping are useful daily additions rather than demo-only novelties.
The recommendation is more cautious for Macs with limited storage. A tested M1 MacBook Air reached 42.92GB with Apple Intelligence enabled, and the local models cannot be fully removed through the old system toggle in applicable installations. Check available space before upgrading, particularly on a 256GB or 512GB Mac used for photos, games, or development.
For Intel owners, macOS 27 is not an upgrade option: Apple Silicon is the minimum. And if an AirPort Time Capsule still handles your backups, AFP’s removal is the detail that deserves attention before the operating-system change becomes a nasty surprise.
