A quick visit to kernel.org confirms that the newest mainline build of the Linux kernel sits at version 5.8, while the stable number is 5.7.8. Anyone can experiment with both and even install them on their favorite distros, but today we have an extreme case: Running the most recent Linux kernel on a 486. As if that weren't enough, the hardware presents additional challenges, so the only way to load that kernel is with a floppy disk….
The Floppy Disk Legacy
Floppy disks, those infernal messengers. We worked with them for years, and we have several good memories, but we didn't think twice when it came to replacing them. Damaged sectors, CRC errors, ruined copies, high cost (floppies were more expensive than we remember), and the drop in overall manufacturing quality quickly pushed us to superior technologies like the USB drive. However, the demand for floppies hasn't completely disappeared, and there are still companies dedicated to their recovery and refurbishment.
FozzTexx's 486
Nor should we forget the retro space. If you find yourself working with a 486 or older system, you'll most likely need a floppy disk or two for essential tasks. And with that in mind, we come to FozzTexx from the Insentricity portal. A couple of weeks ago, FozzTexx purchased a 486 computer on eBay with several technical quirks (the power supply didn't work, and it doesn't boot from a cold boot), four connected cards (video, SoundBlaster, modem, and Multi IDE), and a not-to-be-sneezed-at 36 megabytes of RAM, which in the mid-90s were equivalent in price to the GDP of a small country.
The Challenge: A Large Hard Drive
FozzTexx's goal with that 486 was to install the most recent Linux distro available on a 'large' hard drive (that is, above 8 GB), and that's where the problems began. The BIOS is ancient, enabling LBA causes an automatic hang, Windows 98's FDISK doesn't detect more than 504 MB, FreeDOS ignored the disk entirely, and a network card with XTIDE behaved the same way... but he needed to see how Linux would interpret the disk, and that's how he came to the conclusion of booting the latest Linux kernel from a floppy.
The Solution: Boot from a Floppy
Easier said than done in this case, but the Linux kernel has a tinyconfig mode, small enough to fit on a floppy. Then he took the rootfs from the abandoned project Aboriginal Linux, and the result is what you see in the video: the Linux kernel 5.8.0-RC2+ on a 486 DX2 at 66 MHz with 36 MB of RAM, booting from a floppy in just over a minute.
