The world of Gilead
During the past year, streaming service Hulu surprised us with one of the best dramas. We're referring, of course, to The Handmaid's Tale, a series created by Bruce Miller (The 100), based on the novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood. The plot places us in a dystopian future where a movement calling itself the 'Sons of Jacob' initiates a revolution and eliminates the United States Constitution to restore order. The new regime, the Republic of Gilead, reorganizes the entire social hierarchy, eliminating almost all human rights, especially those concerning women, who are called 'Handmaids' and are forced into sexual and maternal servitude.

The first season of The Handmaid's Tale introduces us to June Osborne, now called Offred, a woman captured while trying to escape to Canada with her husband, Luke, and her daughter, Hannah. Because of her fertility, she becomes a Handmaid to Commander Fred Waterford and his wife, Serena Joy. Hoping that one day she can be free and live with her daughter, Offred is subjected to all kinds of physical and psychological abuse. Over ten episodes we see a mix of Offred's grim present and memories of her past life with her husband and daughter.
The second season
The Handmaid's Tale received widespread critical acclaim and dominated the Emmy and Golden Globe awards. The series was renewed for a second season, which will be much darker than the first and will consist of thirteen episodes. The series stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd and Max Minghella, with Marisa Tomei joining as a guest star. Produced by MGM Television, the second season of The Handmaid's Tale will premiere on April 25, 2018 on Hulu.
