Lately we've been receiving series based on films, regardless of how much time has passed. If you're into sci-fi series, you're probably already up to date with the TV adaptations of 12 Monkeys and Minority Report.
But as they say, third time's a charm. Before the end of the year, Westworld, the series set in the 1973 film of the same name arrives. Written and directed by novelist Michael Crichton, the film Westworld takes place in a futuristic amusement park, where androids star in various historical eras until they malfunction and begin killing visitors.
The Westworld series is also set in a futuristic amusement park, but led by Dr. Robert Ford. The facilities feature androids that can fulfill any fantasy, no matter how dark. And it's here that we notice the first differences from Michael Crichton's adaptation. While the film takes place in a futuristic attraction full of brothels and malfunctioning robotic gunslingers, the Westworld series is populated by a sentient artificial intelligence (and, possibly, set in a virtual reality). In fact, the producers themselves describe it as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin”.
The cast includes a wide range of celebrities such as Anthony Hopkins (Dr. Robert Ford), Ed Harris (The Man in Black), Evan Rachel Wood (Dolores Abernathy), James Marsden (Teddy Flood), Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Rodrigo Santoro, Ben Barnes, Jimmi Simpson, and Tessa Thompson, among others. Created by Jonathan Nolan (Person of Interest) and Lisa Joy, the series has the backing of J. J. Abrams and Bryan Burk (both worked together on the new Star Trek films) as executive producers. Westworld will air on HBO starting October 2016.
