Finding a partner online is one of the most popular activities, and if there's a platform that's currently a cut above the rest, it's Tinder. The hybrid dating app and social network has millions of users worldwide, yet several reports have surfaced suggesting the existence of a secret version of Tinder called Tinder Select. How do you gain access to this “VIP edition”? Lots of success on regular Tinder, a high-profile job (think CEO or model), or a bank account with many digits…
How does a famous person look for a partner? Unless Cupid shoots an arrow on the film set (which happens more often than you'd think), I imagine they attend exclusive parties, special events like the Met Gala, or take vacations to exotic places only the super-rich can visit. The love lives of actors, actresses, singers, businesspeople, politicians, and athletes are the fuel that keeps tabloids alive, both in print and online. And they've also become a priority for some internet services. Needless to say, any platform or social network must guarantee privacy and discretion—exactly what Tinder Select seems to offer.
In other words: on one hand, we have traditional Tinder, where millions of people participate daily; on the other, there's Tinder Select, intended for the “crème de la crème.” According to available information, being a celebrity, a millionaire, or someone with notable success on standard Tinder (a good physique helps) almost guarantees entry. The people behind the service sent out a limited number of invitations to select users, a small group of whom can nominate potential new members. Those nominated don't get the power to nominate others, which theoretically should keep the profile count in Tinder Select quite low. Those already inside can switch between the VIP and regular sections with ease.
This isn't the first time a dating app has tried to play the exclusivity card by separating users by looks or economic status, and I doubt it'll be the last. Personally… ugh. Tinder Select is another glass palace on the 50th floor, more artificial than instant juice. If any famous person thinks they'll find happiness there, I wish them luck.
